Generally, the more features you get, the more expensive it will be. There are various types of units: portable, wall-mounted & countertop, or under-the-counter units. The water ionizer cost for an under-the-counter unit is typically the highest since there is additional hardware required. A portable unit has the lowest water ionizer cost, but is very limited in terms of performance. A wall mounted, or countertop unit is right in the middle, and so is the water ionizer cost. The ionization plate (or electrolysis plate) is the heart of an ionizer. The materials used are very important because the ionizer will be putting an electrical current through the plates to ionize the water, that’s the basic principle. The watts can be anywhere from 80 watts up to 400 watts, and if the plates are made from anything other than platinum and titanium then they will warp, deteriorate and become damaged in a matter of months. The only ionizers to consider are ones with plates made of titanium covered in platinum.
The process of covering the titanium with platinum will vary with each manufacturer, some dip the plates in platinum, some spray the platinum on and then bake the plates, and some even put more than one coat of platinum over the titanium. If you can afford it, I would recommend multiple coats of platinum, then the plates will last even longer, but platinum is an expensive metal so the more platinum there is, the higher the water ionizer cost will be. When it comes to the method the plates have been coated, it really doesn’t make that huge of a difference really, as long as they are titanium coated in platinum.
As we mentioned before, the more precious metal used, the higher the water ionizer cost. The plates ionize the water, the more metal there is to contact the water, the more efficiently the water can be ionized. Surface area is not a huge decision maker really, but it will
have a huge impact on the total water ionizer cost. This is one area where most buyers make a mistake…just because a unit has a larger surface area doesn’t necessarily mean it is the absolute best ionizer. Bigger is not necessarily better. If Ionizer A has a huge surface area but can only produce -400 ORP, and Ionizer B has a much smaller surface area but can produce -600 ORP, it would best to go with Ionizer B for 2 reasons: the water will be healthier, and the reduced plate size will mean the water ionizer cost will be much less!
The pH Levels
This is one of the most important features of a water ionizer, the ability to produce water with various pH levels. Alkaline water is pH 7.0 – 12.0, and acidic water is pH 2.0 – 6.0. The pH levels are important, but when it comes to cost, it can only be so important. If you are buying a water ionizer strictly for drinking alkaline water, then you will want to look at units that can produce pH 7.0 – pH 10.0. The pH 7.0 – 10.0 range is good enough, many people really do not drink pH 12.0 water. If you want to take advantage of the benefits of acidic water as well, then you can look at units that can produce the 2.0 – 6.0 range. Acidic water can be used for cleaning your fruits and veggies, protecting your hair, strong acidic water can be used for disinfecting and so on. The only advice here is to ensure that you can get various levels of pH water from the ionizer, not just one or two settings, at least three different settings would do the job.
Oxidation Reduction Potential, or ORP, is critical feature of an ionizer. Oxidation is the reason why our cells degrade and cause the signs of aging. ORP is how much the water can reduce the potential of oxidation. You never want to get an ionizer that will only produce -200 ORP, you want that negative number to be higher, say around -500 or more is decent, not great but decent. Some ionizers can produce ORP as low at -900! The bottom line with ORP is: The higher negative numbers of ORP the better. Also, ORP doesn’t affect the water ionizer cost so much.
The amount of watts a unit doesn’t have a huge impact on the water ionizer cost, nor does it have a big effect on the overall performance of an ionizer. However, the more power a unit has, the lower the ORP will be. Some ionizers have 375 watts of power and produce -900 ORP, but other units have 230 watts of power but produce the same ORP. When it comes to power, it’s the same case as surface area, bigger is not necessarily better.
Single or Dual? Well, the more filtration the better. There are many contaminants in tap water, stuff you really don’t want to drink. A single stage filter adds one extra layer of protection, but I would say a dual filter would be better since it is twice the protection. When you are looking at the filtration system, make sure at least one of those filters is a Carbon Activated Filter.
A couple other items you should look at are the Flow Rate, Filter Life, Dimensions and, of course, the Warranty.
Flow Rate: How fast water is dispensed…you don’t want to wait 5 minutes to fill a bottle do you? An average flow rate to look for is around 0.75 gallons per minute.
Filter Life: Filters cost money, some as much as $100, so the longer a filter lasts, the better. You may save money on the ionizer up front, but the overall water ionizer cost may increase significantly if you have to change the filter every month at $100 a pop.
Dimensions: If you’re short on counter space then you may want to look at this one closely. There are some ionizers called “Under The Sink” or “Under The Counter” units, and they can save you space hiding out of view.
Warranty: This is also important, if you unit has any problems you will need to get it repaired. The longer the warranty lasts, and the more that is covered the better. Most units come with a 5 year warranty. If it is less than 5 years you may need to question how solid the unit is, or how reputable the company is.
